named Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. The name
was chosen by Syd Barrett.

Barrett is this "Crazy Diamond".

Pink Floyd Fact #4:
David Gilmour sometimes refers to Comfortably
Numb as Come On Big Bum.
Pink Floyd Fact #5:
Syd Barrett changed the title of Pink Floyd's
second single, Games For May to See Emily Play.
Pink Floyd Fact #6:
That monotone voice that is played in the begining
of Keep Talking is the voice of the famous Physicist,
Stephen Hawking.
Pink Floyd Fact #7:
The nuclear holocaust is signified as the second
sun in the song, Two Suns In The Sunset.
Pink Floyd Fact #8:

Mason's face.
Pink Floyd Fact #10:
The Division Bell is the only Pink Floyd album
that reached number 1 on the charts in both
the United Kingdom and the United States.
Pink Floyd Fact #11:
In the song Pigs, (Three Different Ones) Roger
Waters is talking about Mary Whitehouse an old
lady from the 70's in Britian who had a smut
free talk TV, a media free sex, violence, and
bad language. Roger thought she was pretty much
a whore.
Pink Floyd Fact #12:
Another one is in the song One Of These Days,
Roger wanted to say "One Of These Days
I'm Going To Cut Young Into Little Pieces."

is also the influence on Roger to write the
song One Of My Turns because he smashed his
trailer in front of Pink Floyd. Also, Bob Geldof
wasn't supposed to cut his nipple or cut his
hand on the window, he came up with that on
his own.
Pink Floyd Fact #18:
Pink Floyd wrote the song Alan's Pyschedelic
Breakfast for their cook, who cooks for them

The Publius Enigma
is a puzzle connected with Pink Floyd's 1994 album
The Division Bell. It was perhaps the first Internet-based
promotion for a major band, coming at a time before
most artists or record labels had any kind of
official Internet presence. Known designers of
the puzzle include Storm Thorgerson and Richard
Wright.
When The Division Bell was released, an anonymous
user started posting messages to the Usenet
under the name Publius. He claims to be a messenger
sent to guide Pink Floyd fans through an Enigma
burried deep within the lyrics, pictures and
music of the Division Bell album. He also promises
a great reward to those who figure it out. David
Gilmour denied any existance of any enigma.
Here are all of Publius' original postings.
You have heard the message Pink Floyd has delivered,
but have you listened? Perhaps I can be your
guide, but I will not solve the enigma for you.
All of you must open your minds and communicate
with each other, as this is the only way the
answers can be revealed. I may help you, but
only if obstacles arise. Listen. Read. Think.
Communicate. If I don't promise you the answers
would you go.
- Publius
So it seems that some of you have speculated
with the past and found nothing. Fair enough.
But, is it impossible to believe things have
changed? You're all so concerned with my identity
- but you're just shooting the messenger. The
message itself is what's important, and not
who delivers it. Some of you may be beginning
to understand. Remember: If I don't promise
you the answers would you go. Do you think that
I know something you don't know?
- Publius
Some of you are asking thoughtful questions
(a tip of the hat to Geoff Lee and Duncan Anker,
among others, who have contacted me directly).
Now, let me provide a few answers that will
perhaps inspire more of you. First of all, as
you read further, you will better understand
why my identity cannot be revealed. Let it be
said again that I am a messenger, simple as
that. I cannot tell you who has sent me, but
I can say that I was directed to you because
you're a strong collective body of Pink Floyd
fans and experts. Those of your newsgroup who
have chosen to "flame" my postings
because I won't divulge my identity are clearly
choosing to focus on the messenger and not what
has been disclosed in the messages. This is
unfortunate. I would like to think that for
all your time spent listening, discussing and
thinking about Pink Floyd, you would be drawn
to something unique and and potentially extraordinary.
More importantly, to those of you who have been
following my earlier messages, do not be intimidated
by the jeers of the others. Have faith and be
assured that what I am about to explain is very
real. AS SOME OF YOU HAVE SUSPECTED, "The
Division Bell" is not like its predecessors.
Although all great music is subject to multiple
interpretations, in this case there is a central
purpose and a designed solution. For the ingenious
person (or group of persons) who recognizes
this - and where this information points to
- a unique prize has been secreted. How and
Where? The Division Bell - Listen again, Look
again. As your thoughts will steer you Leading
the blind while I stared out the steel in your
eyes. Lyrics, artwork and music will take you
there. FOR SEVERAL MONTHS, I have watched and
found that you have speculated on one level
of meanings. However, no one among you has yet
discovered the beginnings of what has always
been there and the unusual challenge that has
been included. So now I have been given a task
- as your "guide" - to begin pointing
you in the right direction. LET ME BE CLEAR:
For those of you willing to think through this
perplexing and intricate problem, a singular
prize awaits. But, the challenge is accompanied
by a particularly complex solution. For those
of you who choose to ignore or even ridicule
this posting, it is your loss. It will be your
own skepticism that precludes you from participating.
If you choose to discuss your progress openly
on this forum, I will be able to help steer
you from time to time. CAREFULLY REVIEW my previous
messages and this very posting for additional
help and a place to begin. Best of luck.
- Publius
While I am encouraged by the positive response
to my last post, I understand that many of you
still doubt my authenticity. It is for those
of you who now believe, as well as for those
of you who still may doubt, that I have arranged
for an extremely visible and conclusive demonstration
of my truthfulness. To validate the trust of
those who believe, as well as to reconcile the
doubt of others, I have gone to great lengths
to plan the following display of communication:
Monday, July 18, East Rutherford, New Jersey,
Approximately 10:30pm. Flashing white lights.
There is an enigma. Trust.
-Publius
Congratulations to all those who have newly
begun the search. Many of you correctly identified
my signal last Monday (7/18). As promised, this
gesture should serve as visible proof of my
truthfulness and of the enigma's existence.
Contrary to recent postings, this beacon has
never appeared previously. If necessary, check
your available resources to verify this fact.
For those of you who still number among the
non-believers, I have provided verification
of my credentials and I am finished attempting
to appease you. Originally, the newsgroup requested
evidence of my legitimacy and, in fairness to
what I was asking of you, I complied. I believe
I have been generous in what I've offered. I
have extended you all an invitation into something
exclusive and unique - a token of appreciation
for your continued Pink Floyd interest. However,
some of you still distrust the proof that has
been clearly shown to you. An integral part
of solving this enigma is a willingness to imagine
and speculate creatively. While some of you
still seem resistant to engage in such endeavors,
I have no further inclination to try and prove
a claim you will simply never choose to accept
- regardless of what efforts I undertake to
convince you otherwise. I am not willing to
engage in a futile battle with skeptics. You
will either have to contend with what proof
has been supplied or return to your regular
newsgroup dialogue and discuss whatever matters
you feel secure are within your complete sphere
of understanding. Sadly, there will be no part
in the enigma for you. Stand aside, and let
those who have demonstrated the incentive to
embrace this challenge with an eager and open
mind pass by unencumbered by your flames and
arrows. BEST OF LUCK to all who have begun researching
the available clues! I promise that you have
embarked on what will ultimately be an enriching
and fascinating journey. Judging from recent
postings, many of you are asking intelligent
questions and raising provocative issues. Progress
is being made. Do not be frustrated in your
initial attempts. Recall my earlier caution
that the solution to this enigma will not be
discovered easily. It was designed to be unlocked
only with time and healthy perseverance. Your
newfound persistence has paid off and, in turn,
let me provide a few more hints to orient your
research. Though the newsgroup discourse is
generally moving in a positive direction, examine
in particular the posts of Matt Denault, mcginni,
John Take and Evan Coyne Maloney for helpful
clues. Well done people! I will also provide
some new data to work with: My friends
* A recipe for a solution
Review the Division Bell material. Orient yourselves
a first time, then open your minds again a second
time to truly move ahead. Notice everything
that has been presented since all the necessary
evidence has been supplied. Direct yourselves
with communication: and two more - Leading the
blind while I stared out the steel in your eyes(this
clue has already been posted, but has not yet
been thoroughly addressed). A question: what
exactly is a division bell and where could this
lead your thoughts?
-Publius
Please note that my communication with you will
now become less frequent. Recall what has been
previously explained: "I may help you,
but only if obstacles arise." I was not
sent to directly supervise, nor to instruct
or acknowledge your progress on a regular basis.
I was only dispatched to begin guiding you in
the right direction. Clearly, many of you have
followed my lead and now the onus is on you
to make further inroads into solving this enigma.
Be prepared to travel! Your effort - albeit
demanding - will be rewarded with a treasure
waiting to be unearthed. Make no mistake; this
prize is real and certainly very tangible. Organize
yourselves formally, plan a true method of investigation,
choose your leaders. Rest assured that I am
always watching and will certainly return to
aid in the event of any serious deadlock. However,
this challenge was intended to be met by you
- the Pink Floyd experts. My role is clearly
secondary. Lastly, for those of you who are
still concerned with unveiling my identity,
I have repeatedly stated that this matter is
not at issue. "It is the message that is
important, and not who delivers it." Although
this notion seems to cause you endless irritation,
my anonymity is my right (as it would be yours).
I have always understood that the Internet was
founded on the precepts of respecting other
community members. I would only hope that those
nay-sayers respect the rights of the voluntary
enigma participants and my continued right to
privacy as well. You may not agree with what
I have to say, but I still have a right to say
it without hindrance. Best wishes to all in
your search!
-Publius
Yes, I've been watching your progress and am
duly impressed with the recent discourse. Many
of you have taken my words to heart and identified
significant associations between the clues.
Organized communication is the key. Your persistence
and thoughtful analysis is leading you down
the road to a solution. Do not be discouraged;
you are on your way! Special cheers to 'The
Publius Concern' - I'm flattered - and other
formal committees who have formed to investigate
the enigma. Now, let me impart a word of advice:
while each DB component requires its own individual
degree of interpretation, carefully take note
of those subtle, connecting relationships between
seemingly disassociated clues. I emphasize this
an essential step in the right direction. Ask
yourselves: how do these separate clues that
you have been researching and evaluating now
find renewed meaning within an overall, more
unified theme? As an example, what does the
following lyric suggest and how does this relate
to your earlier findings: On the day the wall
came down The Ship of Fools had finally run
aground Promises lit up the night like paper
doves in flight. Lastly, let me leave you with
a final question: Why would the Newspaper be
crumpled? Continued luck to all in your search!
-Publius
My friends, For all of you who are working diligently,
let me once again applaud your persistence and
point out another area of interest: Now frontiers
shift like desert sands While nations wash their
bloodied hands It is my impression that searching
together and exchanging information openly has
enhanced your progress. Good work! Continue
as such and you will unearth your treasure soon
enough. And, best of all, another unusual and
conclusive signal is being prepared to validate
your trust! Have patience. It will be upon you
shortly...
-Publius
My friends, Cheers again, your newsgroup has
certainly succeeded in elevating the "debate"
to a new level of understanding. As promised,
new evidence to validate your trust will be
emerging shortly! Be careful to watch this space
for details. Now, perhaps another clue will
help prior to the arrival of this forthcoming
signal: Because there'll be no safety in numbers
When the Right One walks out of the door. Your
interpretations are very astute, but it's time
to more explicitly review where this information
could lead you. A long road lies ahead; begin
to chart its course...There is much more to
this enigma than just a castle and field in
England!
-Publius
My friends, The signal has been delivered. Over
the past few days, many of you have already
observed it. A great many more will see it on
November 1st. You need only look at the Circle
in The Wall - the Enigma has been announced
worldwide. It's my understanding that there
may even be more clues to find...
-Publius
My friends, As you know, I've been monitoring
the latest discourse - remarkable indeed! Your
newsgroup's resourcefulness - and knowlEdge
of subjects (from physics to geography) is quite
reassuring. Be sure, this caliber of analysis
is the means to the enigma solution and the
way to track a Path to the Plunder! For all
this hard work, none discouraged Among you,
I hope! By this time, most of you have seen
the recent Pink Floyd communiques as further
prOof of the enigma's authenticity. However,
I wonder if there aren't more Signals that have
yeT to be discovered... And, I also wonder if
the essence of my eaRlier statement "there
is much more to this enigma than just a castle
and field in England" has truly been noted...Lastly,
let me point out another Area of verbiage I've
found quite revealing: Now life devalues day
be day As friends and neighbors turn away. Continued
Luck in your pursuit!
-Publius
Greetings to everyone. I see that your work
is progressing nicely. Some of you have noticed
clues in the mini-disc release of "A Momentary
Lapse of Reason." The appearance of the
words "publius" and "enigma"
were included to give you further proof of my
legitimacy. It is time to give you another clue
from "The Division Bell." Some of
you have been searching the booklet through
different means, such as holding pages up to
a light to see what bleeds through from the
other side. Turn your attention away from these
methods and refocus on the words and the music.
See what you have not seen. Finally, a clue
in the lyrics: Why did we tell you then You
were alwayS the golden boY And that you'D never
lose the light in your eyes. You are getting
closer to the solution. Keep up your efforts,
and rest assured that the enigma will be revealed.
-Publius
My friends, Ah, long time no speak - but for
good reason! Much work is taking place on this
end; plenty of clues and evidence still to find.
Yet, much discourse has occurred in my absence
and many new "investigators" have
joined in communicating regarding the Enigma.
Bravo, I couldn't applaud your tenacity further
- except with a new morsel to digest and examine!
But, "Is it a reference to failed negotiations?"
So I open my door to my enemies And I ask could
we wipe the slate clean But they tell me to
please go f--- myself You know you just can't
win. And, then there's the matter of those three
dots - right between THE DIVISION BELL and Cluster
One. For those of you who are despaired in your
search, I ask: How will you despair with a singular
bounty still waiting to unearthed? Come now...
-Publius
My friends, With months to stand back and observe
your progress, I must congratulate you on your
persistence. My planned and prolonged absence
from the newsgroup has inspired the formation
of vast groups of people all over the world
to work closely and in concert with each other.
Plus, the lack of regular clues has encouraged
not only a thorough reconsideration of the existing
pool of evidence, but also a vigorously renewed
search through the music, lyrics and artwork
to discover even more information. You are all
owed a sincere round of applause! But now, as
we move forward, a most exciting turn of events
is about to take place. Thousands have already
joined the search and a great deal more will
soon follow. And, while the ultimate prize still
lies waiting to be unearthed, let me help by
pointing out that there is another physical
location that must be visited before final progress
can be made. As I've been monitoring your discussions,
I feel this should now be made clear in order
for you to properly proceed. As a reward for
your diligence, I can help lead you to this
landmark through a small series of new clues.
But, make no mistake, this new information must
be considered in relation to all previous clues
that have either been discovered by you or provided
by me. The first clue: There is great significance
in the page numbers. While some of you might
think this statement vague, trust me. It is
not. While I have been gone awhile, trust that
I will return shortly with the second clue.
You are all closer than you think.
-Publius
In April 2005, Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason
stated that the Publius Enigma did exist, and
that it had been instigated by the record company,
rather than the band:
"That was a ploy done by EMI. They had
a man working for them who adored puzzles. ...
He was working for EMI and suggested that a
puzzle be created that could be followed on
the Web. The prize was never given out. To this
day it remains unsolved."
